Being a Michigander all my life it's hilarious to hear others try to pronounce cities here in the mitten state. I guess when you've spent all of your life in Michigan it's easy to know how to properly pronounce some of Michigan's most confusing town names. Below are my top 5 towns that tourists get wrong constantly!

Oh and PS I'm dyslexic so I'm totally going to screw this up but just try and follow along. Use my pronunciation and you'll be right 60% of the time every time.

5. Sault Ste. Marie

Also known as just "The Soo" this Upper Peninsula city is always pronounced wrong by non-Michiganders. There's really too many letters in this cities name considering its pronounced Sue-Saint-Ma-Ree.

4. Hamtramck

I'm pretty sure whoever spelled this city is dyslexic just like me. Hamtramck looks like it would be said like Ham-Tramk but its actually Ham-Tram-Ick. Don't ask me where the silent "I" is at.

3. Dowagiac

Until I spent some time in South Bend, IN I honestly have never had to pronounce Dowagiac. Believe me I messed up and said DOW-Wagic and was laughed at plenty of times. Located on the southwestern side of the state a lot of people mispronounce Dowagiac but its actually really easy. Just say Duh-Wah-Gee-Ack or if you're me you pronounce it Doe-Wah-Jack. Done!

2. Ypsilanti

I can totally see someone saying Yip-Si-Lanti but us Michiganders know it's Ip-Suh-Lan-Tee. Oh and if you visit Ypsi as us mitten folk call it make sure you check out The Wurst Bar for their amazing burgers.

1. Mackinac Island

This is by far the #1 most mispronounced city in Michigan. It's one of the biggest tourist destinations, so it makes sense that so many people say it incorrectly. You're a true tourist if you pronounce it 'Mack-In-Nack" when its actually pronounced 'Mack-In-NAW.

There you go! My top 5 cities that are always pronounced wrong here in the mitten state. Feel free to comment below with what states you think should be added to this list!
