Beecher Community Schools are making the switch to year round classes and will be the first school to do so in Genesee County.

Starting next month, all school buildings in the district will switch to a year-round calendar.  The move comes after a very poor showing in the Michigan Merit Exam by Beecher.  This is a proactive effort to develop a new focus on learning in the district.

The Aug. 20 start is three weeks earlier than the normal first day of school, which is after the Labor Day holiday.

Will the decision make a lasting difference?  I think so, and I think that districts will start to follow suit in the years to come.  The idea of Summer break is becoming an outdated model in a world where kids are learning more, faster than ever before.
