Hip-hop icon Big Daddy Kane delivered a smooth yet entertaining performance for NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert.

Backed a small band, Kane, aka Dark Gable, performed his classic hits “Smooth Operator,” “Ain’t No Half Steppin’” and “Raw.” In between songs, the rap legend talked to the crowd about the generation gap between young and old rap fans.

BDK said that it’s important that fans of all ages support whatever they like, while "focusing on what's positive and try to keep that in the spotlight."

"Whatever form of hip-hop you like, love it. Keep it going, keep it strong and make sure it's positive," he said. "If you love hip-hop, just stay focused and keep on supporting it."

Before closing out his set, the 49-year-old veteran rhyme-slinger treated the crowd to an impromptu "Freestyle." Over a downing piano groove, Kane spit a quick braggadocios verse to show that he can still lyrically flow with the best of them.

Overall, Big Daddy Kane is never half-stepping and he gets the job done.

Salute to NPR for allowing rap legends to shine on Tiny Desk. Watch it above.
