Consumers Energy delivered the bad new to Genesee County officials this week that a $700 million project, expected to bring 600 jobs to Flint would be put on hold.

The plans are on hold because Consumers decided to buy an existing plant in Jackson county to save money versus building the new on in Flint.  The news is a huge blow to our area, but Comsumers reps have said that the project is on hold, not cancelled.

The Thetford project has been deferred, not canceled. We'll make additional decisions in the future based on market condition and demand for electricity. Purchasing an existing natural gas plant in Jackson County is going to save over $545 million for the rate payers of Consumers Energy. Those dollars are going to be used to enhance the distribution system to improve reliability and make our rates more affordable for competition with other states in the region

The reactions have been mixed since the announcement with some customers thinking about lower energy bills while other focus on the loss of potential jobs.
