The Conchords are officially making a return Flight. HBO confirms that Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement will return to HBO in their musical roles with a new hour-long Flight of the Conchords reunion special, just in time for spring.

HBO announced the May reunion special from its TCA press tour panel, though star Clement had recently alluded to the likelihood of a special in the near future. The new material will tape before a live sold-out audience during their United Kingdom tour, and feature “the duo performing their classics and new original songs from their ‘Flight of the Conchords Sing Flight of the Conchords Tour.’”

The New Zealand duo made their HBO debut in 2005 with an appearance on One-Night Stand, eventually landing a full Flight of the Conchords series in 2007. The meta-comedy chronicling the pair in New York City earned ten Emmy nominations in just two seasons, and eventually won McKenzie and Clement a Grammy for Best Comedy Album in 2008. Hamish Hamilton will direct the new hour-long special.

Flight of the Conchords falls neatly into HBO’s new reunion habit alongside Curb Your Enthusiasm and Deadwood, but will Bret and Jemaine’s return live up to the original series? Stay tuned for the latest.
