The Flint City Lockup may soon be closing due to a lack of funding set aside in the state budget.

Genesee County Sherriff Robert Pickell says more overcrowding could happen at the county jail if the lockup shuts down. Pickell also says releasing non-violent criminals could be a possibility as well.

State money reopened the lockup five years ago, and helped reduce overcrowding at the Genesee County Jail. According to Pickell a shut down of the Flint City Lockup is a possibility considering there is nothing in the state budget to keep the lockup open. Currently the lockup would need $4.5 million to stay open.
