Amir Hekmati is finally a free man after serving more than five years in an Iranian prison.  He is among five people that were freed after a prisoner exchange with the US.

Amir Hekmati has become a household name, after the Flint native was wrongfully imprisoned in 2011.  #FreeAmirHekmati has been a trending hashtag consistently over the last couple of years, as the Hekmati family worked tirelessly to get him released.

Their prayers were answered over the weekend as the prisoner exchange was announced, and they posted the following statement on their Facebook page.

US Congressman Dan Kildee, who worked on behalf of Amir Hekmati, also expressed relief.

We’ve had a few instances where we thought Amir might come home and it’s been close, and then it didn’t happen

We are all relieved, and happy for the Hekmati family!  This has been a tragedy that has gone on for too long, but everyone is relieved to see that it is finally coming to an end.
