The news goes from bad to worse for Flint School employees and students, after the announcement that four schools will close, comes the word of major lay offs.

The Flint Board of Education voted 8-1 Tuesday to lay off 227 teachers and counselors.  The schools lay off teachers every year, but nothing compared to this years cuts.

This year, the cuts were made first on a new teacher rating system.  Principals, content coordinators, and others graded the teachers.  Those with "less than effective" ratings were laid off first.  Only 52 of the laid off teachers did not reach "effective" status.  The rest of the cuts were based on seniority.

The school board will hire some of the teachers back a couple of weeks into the school year, and they hope that the move will save between seven and eight million dollars.
