Doctors at Hurley Medical Center are urging senior citizens, children, and pregnant women to stop drinking the Flint water immediately due to double the acceptable amount of lead in the water.

Today the Hurley Medical Center warned that drinking the Flint water can result in irreversible damages including memory loss and lowered IQ. The study concluded that Flint water has double the acceptable amount of lead. A Virginia Tech study also found excessive blood levels in children and in babies in the Flint area.

Doctors say that the damage from drinking Flint water isn't temporary, but for decades to come. Doctors are urging mainly senior citizens, children, and pregnant women to stop drinking the water immediately and also advised people to use lead filters.

A spokesperson for the Genesee County Health Department stated that the damage isn't noticed physically for children, and can only be identified by a blood test.

A Virginia Tech study concluded that lead in the old pipes is the cause for so much lead in the cities water. A GoFundMe account has been set up by the study group to help citizens of Flint get lead filters.

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) issued the following statement today

“This new study showing elevated blood lead levels among Flint’s children is very troubling. People have the right to have confidence that their drinking water is safe.

“Immediate action needs to be taken by the State of Michigan to ensure that relief is provided to people who are concerned about lead levels in their water. Today as part of my ongoing efforts, I talked with the EPA Region 5 Administrator about the State of Michigan providing emergency assistance, including lead-clearing filters and bottled water, until a more permanent solution can be determined.

“This new study by the medical community also raises additional doubts about prior water testing done by the DEQ and EPA that stated the water was in compliance with federal law. I have been completely unsatisfied with their answers to my questions regarding their testing methodology, which is why I have called for additional immediate independent and scientific testing to be done.

“Flint residents need and deserve immediate action to ensure the safety of their drinking water.”
