Music recently lost one of its true pioneers as rock and roll icon Charles "Chuck" Berry has passed away at the age of 90. According to reports, he died at his home near Wentzville, Mo., Sat. March 18.

Berry is known as the father of rock n roll, defining the genre from its infant stages with songs likes, "Maybellene", "Roll Over Beethoven", "Rock and Roll Music" and "Johnny B. Goode" in the 1950s. Ever the showman, his guitar solos were things of beauty, and his style would be swagger jacked by many who came shortly after him. As recently as a few years back, he was still performing live.

A message on Berry's Facebook page confirmed the passing and requested privacy in these times of bereavement. It reads: "We are deeply saddened to announce that Chuck Berry - beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather - passed away at his home today at the age of 90. Though his health had deteriorated recently, he spent his last days at home surrounded by the love of his family and friends. The Berry family asks that you respect their privacy during this difficult time."

Many people in the hip-hop community have been touched by the loss of the guitar guru, with many of them taking to social media to express their condolences and praise Berry's work. "Chuck Berry didn't help define or was part of the fabric: he literally was THE STANDARD of rock n roll," The Roots' Questlove posted on Twitter.
