Michigan lawmakers are seeking to pass a handful of bills during the current legislative session that will repeal some of the antiquated and borderline ridiculous statutes passed throughout the years. For example, did you know it is illegal to use colorful expletives in front of women and children? Illegal to participate in a walkathon?

All of these dumb laws are being addressed this week in the House Criminal Justice Committee. The goal is to repeal statutes that are almost never enforced. Yet, believe it or not, there is some resistance. Some lawmakers argue that since the Legislature did approve the bills and the governor ultimately signed them into law, it may be best to leave them alone.

Here are some of the laws being considered for repeal:

House Bill 4247: Would repeal the law that makes it illegal for anyone other than the hearing impaired to have a dog on an orange leash in public.

House Bill 4248: Would repeal the part of the law that makes it illegal to criticize someone in print for failing to accept the challenge of a fight or duel. It would also do away with the law that makes it unlawful to curse in front of women and children, as well as eliminate the code that makes it an offense to play the Star Spangled Banner poorly in public.

House Bill 4250: Would repeal the ban against participating in a walkathon or other endurance competitions.

House Bill 4251: Would repeal an ordinance making it unlawful to sell small animals (chicks, ducks) that have been dyed. Hopefully, this one passes in time for Easter. Yeeehaaaw!
