Michigan lawmakers can’t drive fifty-five, so, for the third time, they are working to increase the speed limit to 80 mph along stretches of some highways.

According to reports, the proposed bill would only raise the speed limit in rural freeways areas. Still, opposing forces argue that raising the limit would be a risk to public safety because many people will drive five to ten miles over the limit.

Highway safety experts say increasing the speed limit has been known to reduce dangerous driving habits, such as tailgating and excessive passing.

The bill is currently lingering in committee. It is not known, yet, whether it will be voted out and passed along to the House.
