Michigan lawmakers believe the workforce should receive paid sick time. A piece of legislation introduce earlier this week would force employers to provide their workers with a specific amount of sick time each work week. This would allow someone who works 40 hours a week to collect over eight days of sick time per year.

"No one should have to make the difficult decision of choosing between their personal or family health or a paycheck," Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich told Mlive, adding that this bill could benefit 1 million Michigan workers without paid sick time.

Of course, the idea was met with some opposition by other lawmakers who believe forcing employers to provide mandatory sick time is a detriment to job creation in Michigan.

"It is important to remind those well-intentioned policy makers that the employer community is a diverse set of small and large enterprises with varying business models and workforce profiles," said Brian DeBano, with the Michigan Restaurant Association. "We need to avoid prescriptive, one-size-fits-all mandates on private sector industries, like the restaurant industry, that have thrived without the added costs and intrusions of labor unions."
