A Northern Michigan prison is closing and the state says it will save $22 million in the next year.

Pugsley Correctional Facility in Grand Traverse County is just one of 32 prisons in Michigan, and is set to close in September. The prison has over 200 employees and has more than 1,300 beds in the facility.

The announcement was made on Tuesday and is part of the result of Michigan's reduction of the prison population in the state.

Pugsley Correctional Facility is under 42,000 inmates for the first time in 20 years. The prison peaked in population in 2007 with more than 51,000 inmates.

The Department of Corrections says it plans to many of the Pugsley employees into other empty agencies.
