Yesterday a new law was passed that will now force Michigan women to by "rape insurance" to cover abortions.  Abortions are still legal in Michigan but taxpayers will not cover the cost even if a woman is raped.

The new initiative will require women to purchase additional health care to cover the cost of abortions.  The Senate passed the law with a 27-11 vote while the House of Representatives had a closer vote of 62-47.  All the Republicans and two democrats, Charles Brunner of Bay City and Terry Brown of Pigeon, voted for this law.

The Detroit Free Press explains the new law which will be in affect in 90 days.

The initiative would require most private and all public health insurance plans to offer a separate rider for an abortion. And a person would have to buy that rider before knowing if they needed an abortion. They would not be able to buy the rider after getting pregnant by any means, including rape or incest.

Those who are opposed to the new law are already working to repeal it.  Shelli Wiesburg, of the ACLU of Michigan, says her group polled residents in the Senate and House districts and found that residents, especially women, are against this new law, obviously.

“These legislators need to know what they just did,” she said. “Women are mad. It’s like every election cycle, they do something that specifically goes against women.”

I need more time to think about this new law before I can pass judgement. I want to hear from you.  Ladies, how do you really feel about the new law forcing you to purchase 'rape insurance?"  I want to be clear, rape is a serious crime.  I believe personally and professionally it is a horrendous crime.  No woman should ever experience such a satanic attack.
