If all goes according to plan, Michigan patients will not have to worry about being fired from their jobs simply for participating in the state’s medical marijuana program.

Representative Sam Singh recently introduced a bill that would prohibit employers from handing pink slips to workers holding a medical marijuana card. As it stands, conflicting federal and state law has allowed companies to fire employees who test positive for marijuana, even when their use is allowed under state law.

“We’re definitely seeing it across the country. And so therefore we know it will happen here in Michigan, if it already hasn’t,” said Singh.

Under some of the current legislation being considered in 2016, medical marijuana patients would not be protected from losing their jobs. However, Singh hopes to open up the table for discussion over this issue when the next session gets underway in January.
