Nicki Minaj Clarifies Comments About Kanye West’s “Gold Digger” Lyrics

In a new Marie Claire cover story that came out this week, Nicki Minaj offered some perspective on race and dating, evoking a famous Kanye West line in the process. “I’m so tired of black women feeling that when our men get rich, they’re going to leave them for a woman of a different race," she said. "It wasn’t funny when Kanye said [on ‘Gold Digger’], ‘When he get on, he’ll leave your ass for a white girl’ – and Kanye happens to be with a white girl now. It wasn’t funny when he said it; it was the fucking truth.”

Some headlines framed the quote as criticism, and Minaj took to Twitter on Monday (Oct. 17) to clarify that her comments were far from that. "'Slams' a man/genius who gave me one of the biggest looks of my career?," she wrote, referencing her verse on Kanye's "Monster," what many consider to be one of Nicki's big star-turning moments. "I said he wasn't kidding, he was speaking the TRUTH about d industry. I was saying he's the one who said it first. He doesn't apologize for his choices. He tells the truth about stuff ppl don't wanna hear!"

In addition to "Monster," Minaj and West have collaborated on "Dark Fantasy" off 2010's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and "Blazin" off 2010's Pink Friday. For two industry titans, there is no doubt a layer of respect between them, and Minaj explains below how her comments had more to do with Kanye's honesty than his own dating history.

This marks the second time this week that Nicki has had to run her own comments back, saying while on stage about Melania Trump, "You better pray to God you don’t get stuck with a motherfucking Melania. You niggas want brainless bitches to stroke your motherfucking ego. Fuck you nigga.” She later wrote on Twitter in response to a headline saying she "dragged" Melania, "Wasn't 'dragging'.
