It may be called Creed, but make no mistake: This week’s big new release is a Rocky movie. This next-gen legacyquel stars Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Johnson Creed, the illegitimate son of Rocky’s late rival and friend Apollo Creed, who decides to follow in his father’s dancing footsteps and become a professional boxer. He heads to Philadelphia and finds former champ Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), then convinces him to come out of retirement and help train him for a championship match.

Creed is more than just a rehash of the classic Rocky movies; it finds inventive ways to throw new twists into the old formula. Still it does feature a few of elements longtime fans demand from any film starring the Italian Stallion. There’s a big final boxing match. Stallone says “Yo!” a whole bunch of times. And there’s also a training montage.

Every Rocky movie has a training montage. After Rocky himself, it may the single most essential element of the franchise. But what are the essential elements of a Rocky training montage? That’s what the video above was made to figure out. In it, we break down which montage was the shortest and longest, which has the most and least punches, and which have the most and fewest shots. Plus, there’s a list of every single exercise Rocky does over the course of six movies, right down to lifting ox carts full of people. (It’s a great way to build those giant biceps.)

We’ll hopefully revisit this topic once we can add the Creed training montage to it. In the meantime, if you enjoyed this look at the evolution of the Rocky training montage, here are a couple more videos you might enjoy. Watch them all to the end; you know how Rocky feels about quitters.
