Selena Gomez and Katy Perry opted for dark-hued gowns at the UNICEF Snowflake Ball, held in NYC last night (Nov. 27.) Darker colors are usually perfect for this time of year, when it's chillier, and these shades convey a sense of warmth and romance. Both pop stars looked stunning in their gowns, even if one look had us scratching our heads.

Gomez, a UNICEF ambassador, wore a figure-hugging, black Dolce & Gabbana gown, according to Hollywood Life, with gold piping, a floor-sweeping train and a strappy back. The neck had a bit of a halter design, and Gomez wore her lush, shiny black locks spilling around her shoulders. It was a flawlessly executed look for the singer/actress.

Perry, on the other hand, channeled her goth princess look from the 'Wide Awake' video in a lacy, navy blue Naeem Khan column gown with a removable cape with sheer panels, which certainly would be used to provide warmth on a chilly night. However, she looked like a bit of a superheroine, and honestly, we could have done without the extra fabric. It added extra bulk and volume to Perry's shapely, curvy body and felt a little unnecessary. The dress was a little busy, with a belt and the gradations of the fabric. When she removed the distracting cape, the pretty top was much more visible. We also love that she returned to her black locks.

If we had to chose which star dressed better for the event, hands down, we'd pick Sel. She looked grown up and sophisticated while Perry's frock had a bit too much going on and felt a bit overdesigned as a result. That said, Perry worked it. On a less confident diva, this would have been an epic fail. On her, the result is unconventional and forward-thinking.

PopCrushers, which dress did you prefer?
