Self-serve beer could be on its way to Michigan. A recent report from The Detroit News gives us hope for an otherwise depressing society – “tableside devices so customers can tap their own drinks such as wine, or a "wall of beer" where they can draw a favorite amber or stout from a row of self-serve spigots.”

The Liquor Control Commission has proposed a change to regulations that would allow restaurant patrons the luxury of pouring themselves a cold one, a method that is becoming a popular trend through a company called pourmybeer.com. The self-serve beer slinger already has this system in place in over 200 locations across the country, including O’Hare Airport in Chicago.

There are some concerns, however, that implementation of the self-serve booze model would have a negative impact on the youth of Michigan. Some believe this concept will increase the risk of underage drinking and binge drinking in adults. Yet, while the process appears to be Babylonian, the system is still very controlled.

“Here's how it would work: When customers go to a bar or restaurant with a group of friends, the server could provide a dispenser with enough of their favorite alcoholic beverage so each member of the group could have a couple of drinks. If customers wanted more, they would have to ask the server to set up the dispenser with a fresh supply,” according to the DFP.

As it stands, Michigan does not allow self-serve alcohol sales, but this could all change in the very near future. Despite some controversy, the Liquor Control Commission has stated that this concept is no different than if a group of people ordered pitchers of beer.
