In some ways, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a higher-end, less grating version of James Franco, but occasionally you have to wonder if we’ve allowed him to take himself a little too seriously. Take the latest trailer for Oliver Stone’s Snowden, for instance, which A.) Reminds you that this is a movie that is still coming out soon, and B.) Features one of the most baffling prestige-acting accents in recent memory.

Stone was joined by Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley to debut the new trailer during today’s Snowden panel at Comic-Con 2016. Like the previous one, this trailer tries to evoke a sense of all-consuming dread as it tells the true story of the famed, real-life NSA whistleblower who leaked classified documents to the press to expose illegal surveillance programs. Mostly it just comes off a bit silly, what with all the giant heads peering ominously from giant screens and the sad, slowed-down cover of “When the Saints Come Marching In.”

And this trailer didn’t even have Nicolas Cage in it.

Then there’s Gordon-Levitt’s accent, which sounds like he ran his voice through a microwave in an effort to emulate the real Edward Snowden, whose incredible story has already been told in Laura Poitras’ riveting doc Citizenfour.

Here’s the official synopsis for Stone’s film:

Academy Award®-winning director Oliver Stone, who brought "Platoon," "Born on the Fourth of July," "Wall Street" and "JFK" to the big screen, tackles the most important and fascinating true story of the 21st century. "Snowden," the politically-charged, pulse-pounding thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley, reveals the incredible untold personal story of Edward Snowden, the polarizing figure who exposed shocking illegal surveillance activities by the NSA and became one of the most wanted men in the world. He is considered a hero by some, and a traitor by others. No matter which you believe, the epic story of why he did it, who he left behind, and how he pulled it off makes for one of the most compelling films of the year.

Snowden also stars Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson and Rhys Ifans, and hits theaters on September 16.
