In Lansing, Michigan, the Senate has just moved closer to having all welfare recipients pass a drug test to keep benefits. At least three counties in the State of Michigan will participate in the new testing program.

According to WNEM, a Republican Party-lead Senate passed the bill, 25-11, to drug test residents who take advantage of the cash benefit program.  If the recipient is suspected of using drugs illegally, they can be ordered to take a drug test.  If their test comes back positive, they are at risk of losing benefits.

The Department of Human Services has the authority now to screen applicants and recipients for substance abuse.  The Senate has approved $500k to fund this pilot program,  no word on when it will start though.  What are your thoughts on drug testing welfare recipients?
