Store Says Chris Brown Warning Labels Actually Boosting Album Sales
Last week, shoppers reported seeing Brown’s album with a sticker that read: “Warning: Do not buy this album! This man beats women.” However, the much-publicized stunt, which HMV said was an isolated incident, may have helped promote the album.
A rep told NME that the people behind the stickering “got their point across pretty effectively,” but inadvertently made more people aware of the new release by drawing attention to it. The spokesperson said, “We were as surprised as anyone when the stickers appeared in one of our stores outside of London at the back end of last week. Obviously someone must have snuck in to put them on a handful of CDs, and although they weren’t up very long before staff removed them, the person responsible managed to take a snap and send it out to media.”
The rep added, “I guess they got their point across pretty effectively — with widespread coverage around the world, though, by the same token, quite a few more people now know there’s a new Chris Brown album out.”
Brown’s fifth studio album was released on June 29, and debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top 200, selling 135,000 copies in its first week.
