With the harvest season in full swing, so is the demand for sweet potato vodka. This seasonal alcoholic beverage is mostly produced from the North Carolina sweet potato harvest, which is currently underway, and experts anticipate this year’s harvest to be more bountiful than previous years.

Interestingly, while this potent potato drink has roots in the south, the state of Michigan is actually credited for its development. Covington Gourmet Vodka, which is considered the “Best Yam Vodka” on Earth, was first produced several years ago at Michigan State University.

"We actually brought sweet potatoes to Michigan State University," Jim Eason, co-owner of CGV, told Metro Times. "We spent a week with the professor and his crew and we made our very first batch of sweet potato vodka there."

The only way to truly understand the appeal of sweet potato vodka is to taste it for yourself, but Eason says it has creamy overtones with a hint of heat. "It's more expensive to use sweet potatoes than even white potatoes and especially corn or wheat. But it's 100 percent naturally gluten-free and 'Putin-free.' But we don't distill or filter the hell out of it, so those sweet potato caramel notes really do transfer over in the distillation process."
