T.I. Nominated for a Tony Award for His Work on ‘SpongeBob Squarepants: The Musical’
It's not every day that a hip-hop artist is nominated for a Tony Award—and certainly not for their involvement in musical adaptations of children's cartoons. However, T.I. has never been one to follow norms. The 2018 nominations for the Tony Awards were announced today (May 1) and SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical raked in 12 total nominations, carrying along with it the many musicians who contributed to its musical score, T.I. included.
It's unclear what role exactly T.I. played in the musical's scoring, but he is listed among a number of notable artists recognized in the category of Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for Theatre for SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical. T.I.'s son Domani is also nominated.
Other musicians and bands who appear to be involved are The Flaming Lips, Panic! at the Disco, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, John Legend, They Might Be Giants, Yolanda Adams, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper & Rob Hyman, Lil’C and the Plain White T's, according to the Tony Awards committee.
This puts Tip one step closer to achieving the universal goal of an EGOT—an artist who's received an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. T.I. has won a number of Grammys in the past, including Best Solo Rap Performance for "What You Know" and Best Rap/Sung Performance for "My Love" with Justin Timberlake in 2007, and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for "Swagga Like Us" in 2009.
It seems Tip has his hands in just about everything these days, having recently announced his plans to launch a new business competition reality television show called The Grand Hustle. He also linked up with Kanye West this week to produce a new song "Ye vs. the People" which addresses Kanye's controversial support of President Donald Trump.
Best of luck to T.I. in the forthcoming Tony Awards, which take place June 10 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
