The Weeknd may have been the night's biggest winner at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards last night (May 22), but the Canada crooner got a little ahead of himself in the face of victory.

Weeknd was nominated for 19 gold microphones in 16 categories that evening, more than any other single artist. The 26-year-old star ended up taking home an astonishing eight wins including the awards for Top Song Sales Artist, Top R&B Artist and Top 100 Artist, an award he dedicated to recently deceased legend Prince. But in the midst of racking up his hardware, the Weeknd got carried away with his acceptance speech online.

“XO we took home 8! more than any male artist in history. Thank you @billboard,” Weeknd joyfully tweeted. The only problem was that fact turned out to be false. Back in 2004, Usher took home a record-setting 14 honors at the BBMAs for his seminal album Confessions. The Weeknd obviously got schooled, whether it be by someone in his XO camp or Usher fans on social media, soon after sending his triumphant tweet. But no harm no foul. Abel apologized to Usher for getting ahead of himself. "Apologize to the OG @Usher, got excited and spoke to soon" he tweeted a few hours after the show was over.

The Weeknd's 2015 album Beauty Behind The Madness was undoubtedly a highlight of his career thus far. With radio-friendly pop hits like "I Can't Feel My Face" and nods to Weeknd's game-changing melancholy mastery, the LP peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and has sold over 2 million copies to date.
