Last night the hippest trip in America was on BET. The 2016 Soul Train Music Awards aired; with actor Jay Ellis and singer Tamar Braxton hosted the pre-show and Erykah Badu took the main stage to host the awards show.

The Soul Train Awards had many memorable moments but here are the top ten that took the cake.

  • Dru Hill

No need to dust off your Now That's What I Call Music CD to hear Dru Hill— they were live and in rare form last night. Opening the show with "Tell Me," they got the crowd hype doing their signature two-step and jump dance move that makes you lose your breath midway through the song. And just when Black Twitter was about to send out a search party for original band member Jazz, Sisqó introduced him and he graced the stage singing the first verse to "Beauty Is Her Name." And just in case you forgot that Sisqó was the star, he also performed his 1999 hit, "Thong Song."

  • India Arie + Erykah Badu = #BlackGirlMagic

When you have two soul sistahs who know how to play an acoustic guitar and sing at the same time... Bruh! Badu took the mic first to inform the audience they were going to perform a song that would inspire and empower women. Badu then proceeded to sing Nate Dogg's verse from Snoop Dogg's classic (if not incredibly misogynistic) "Ain't No Fun (If The Homies Can't Have None)." She also hit the crowd with Juvenile's "Back That Thang Up." After India pumped her breaks, they performed India's single "Breathe" which was inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement.

  • Two-stepping to Carl Thomas

Carl Thomas hit the stage wearing all white, giving us that summer cruise vibe as he delivered his hit single "Summer Rain." He had the audience reminiscing, and just when you thought he was done, the piano hit the familiar tune and he performed the classic "I Wish," which Jay Z forever immortalized on the Pharrell-assisted "I Just Wanna Love You (Give It to Me)" when he had everyone in the club, singing off-key. Carl Thomas will likely make it to your Friday night playlist after watching his performance.

  • Brandy Takes a Trip down R&B Memory Lane

"We watched her grow up, we saw the whole damn thing," singer Jill Scott said before introducing Brandy as the Lady of Soul recipient. Before Brandy received her award she took the stage by storm to perform hits that go far back into the early 90s. Opening with "Almost Doesn't Count," fans got to hear a mini concert when she sang "What About Us," "Full Moon"  and "Talk About Our Love." And if you didn't have nostalgia after watching her do the bounce, you had to feel it when she performed "Top of the World" and had Ma$e come out in a white fur coat.

  • Erykah Badu

Erykah Badu--also known as the Gucci girl, Cerebellum, Fat Belly Bella, Medulla Oblongata and Low Down Loretta Brown--came back for another year to host the show. From her funky fresh clothing to her hilarious Irma Ervan skits, Badu (who also served as a writer and producer for the program) has been pivotal in transforming the Soul Train Awards into arguably one of the best awards shows on television.

  • Ro James Gets the "Green Light"

Ro James had singer Keke Wyatt standing up in the audience doing a full body roll while holding one hand in the air when he added some heat to the stage with his sultry performance of his single "Permission" from his 2016 major label debut, El Dorado. We definitely gave him the green light.

  • Teddy Riley

Teddy Riley accepted the Legend Award and had a microphone attached to his head ready to perform. He performed classics such as Heavy D's "Now That We Found Love" and Johnny Kemp's Friday night classic "Just Got Paid" as well as Hi5's 1990 first love jam, "I Like The Way (The Kissing Game)." He also brought out Doug E. Fresh and Bobby Brown to pump up the crowd, and had the audience singing along when the members of Guy—Aaron and Damon Hall—came through to sing hits including "Let's Chill" and "I Like."

He even had Tito Jackson hit the stage to Jam on the RIley-produced Michael Jackson hit "Remember The Time."

  • The Soul Cypher

Back for the second year in a row, the soul cypher continues to be a highlight of the Soul Train Awards. Ne-Yo opened with a soulful rendition of "Miss Independent," backed by the incredibly talented Robert Glasper on keys.  He then passed the mic to Angie Stone who added her layer of soul singing "Brotha." Tyrese smoothly asked all the chocolate lovers to scream (they did... loudly). He gave us a little "Sweet Lady" and "How You Gonna Act Like That." Gladys Knight wrapped the cypher as she effortlessly sang "Neither One Of Us," with ad libs from Tyrese and Angie Stone. Ain't no cypher like a soul cypher.

  • Anderson. Paak's Performance

For some reason, people are still getting hip to the talents of California native, Anderson .Paak, and he began trending immediately following his performance with B.J. The Chicago Kid. The rapper/singer/producer/drummer released one of the best albums of the year, Malibu and has been killing it on everything from NPR's Tiny Desk Concert to the numerous festivals he's hit over the past year (he's also slated to perform at the Showtime at The Apollo Revival Special).Either way, it was great to see him get a bit more shine.
