The Lions were blown out by the Packers Sunday, which is not surprising.  There was one kickoff in the game that did have most fans scratching their heads.

Ty Montgomery was set to return the Lions kick when he noticed that it was going to fall short of the end zone.  He didn't want to risk running it out from his own goal line, and he couldn't just leave the ball there either.

So he stepped out of bounds, and stretched out on his stomach to reach the ball, all while keeping his feet out of bounds.  It sounds confusing, so watch the video of the play below.

The ref threw his flag in the air, and pretty much every Lions fan just assumed that there must be some kind of penalty on the Packers.

WRONG!

The penalty was on the Lions for kicking the ball out of bounds . . . even though it never actually went out of bounds.  I agree that it makes no sense, but the NFL rules guru, Mike Pereria, is here to explain what happened.

So instead of being rewarded for a good kick, the Lions were penalized and the Packers easily drove the short field to score.

While all Lions fans were disappointed, none of us are surprised.  This play will mark another instance where the Lions are the victim of a terrible rule, and the rule gets changed in the off season.

Any of this sound familiar?
