Police have identified a Battle Creek man who was shot and killed over the weekend by police officers in Charlevoix County. The shooting happened after the man reportedly pulled a gun out while they were talking with him.

9 & 10 News reports that officers were called Saturday morning to an area near Walloon Lake on reports of a suicidal individual. A Charlevoix County Sheriff's deputy and an officer with the Boyne City Police Department located the man at a parking lot along U.S. 131 and M-75.

As the two began trying to talk to him, the situation escalated and there was allegedly a struggle, before the man pulled out a gun. According to the Michigan State Police, one of the officers then fired a shot, striking the man. The officers reportedly tried providing first aid and called for medical assistance, but he died from his injuries.

The man has been identified as Johnathan Slattery of Battle Creek. No other details related to the incident have been made available at this time, but the Michigan State Police are conducting an investigation into the incident. Both officers are on administrative leave until the investigation has been completed.
