Quentin Tarantino Wants to Make a ‘Django’ Sequel Featuring Zorro
Could Django be unchained again?
That’s the word from Collider, who claim that Quentin Tarantino is working on a sequel to his hit Western thriller that would actually partner Django (played in the original film by Jamie Foxx) with Western hero Zorro. Collider’s sources claim that Tarantino “has tapped Jerrod Carmichael to co-write a Django/Zorro movie based on the crossover comic book series of the same name.”
Tarantino previously wrote a Django/Zorro comic for Dynamite Entertainment; it was published as a seven-issue miniseries in 2014 and 2015. The screenplay being written now is supposedly an adaptation of the concept:
Word of the project first surfaced in the wake of the 2014 Sony hack, which revealed several email exchanges between Tarantino and then-Sony boss Amy Pascal. One email from Tarantino read, “D/Z could be really fun!” and Pascal described the series as “super cool.” Since then, Collider has heard from multiple sources that the film adaptation is real and that Carmichael is working on the script, though they differ on whether he’s writing it on his own with oversight from Tarantino, or co-writing with Quentin himself as well as another, as-yet-unidentified writer.
The book was set a few years after the Django movie and involved the gunfighter meeting Zorro’s alter ego, Diego de la Vega, who hires him to become his bodyguard. He “is soon drawn into a fight to free the local indigenous people from brutal servitude. Learning much from the older man (as he did from King Schultz), he discovers that slavery isn’t exclusive to his people.”
We always assume these kinds of crossovers are very difficult to put together purely because of the issues of the character rights. However improbable it sounds, if it could happen, a Django/Zorro adventure could be spectacular.
