FBI Warns Michigan Residents of New Package Scam
Have you recently been getting any random packages? Specifically, packages that you never ordered? If you have, you're not alone, and the FBI says that Chicago-based scammers are behind a new nationwide scam that is spreading to Michigan.
The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) reports that victims are receiving unsolicited parcels, often containing odd things like greeting cards, costume jewelry, and promotional freebies.

The bad part about all this is, they then demand a payment tied to the delivery.
How It Works:
You start by getting something you didn't order. Then an invoice shows up with vague fees, shipping, handling, and even membership charges, claiming it's for the items that you "purchased". In some cases, the fraudsters call pretending to represent a delivery or billing company, pressuring you to make a payment.
The Dangerous Part of This:
What makes this all so dangerous is that many people pay without realizing the package was dropped off. After all, it's easier to push a button and pay a fee than to question a process.
The FBI warns that once scammers get your card details, they may use them repeatedly to sell to other criminals.
What To Do If It Happens To You
If you find yourself a victim of this scam, you shouldn't pay anything. Don't follow any links or call numbers in unsolicited notices. Instead, you should report the incident to the FBI's IC3 site and alert your bank or credit card issuer. Keep copies of tracking info, invoices, and any communications you may receive.
