Scam Alert: Michigan Residents Being Warned of new Smashing Scam
It feels like there has been an increase in scams recently here in Michigan, and there is a brand new scam making its rounds across the state, which is even sneakier than some that we have seen so far.
People have been receiving texts from the United States Postal Service that look like friendly text messages. Typically along the lines of "Have a Wonderful Day," with a tracking link.
The Newest Scam Hitting Michigan
Don't let that greeting fool you, though. It is a smishing scam that is attempting to steal your personal banking information.

The Michigan Attorney General's Office has issued a warning over these text messages, which are hitting phones across the state of Michigan. They seem legit, but by clicking the link that is attached in the text, it could open up the door to malware, and even phishing sites. This can drain your bank account and even swipe your identity.
This one is particularly dangerous, as the town seems charming and comes from a trusted source like the United States Postal Service. What about a text from them could come across as a scam? But that is the game that is being played, and it is unfortunately working on people here in Michigan.
What You Should Do
If you end up getting a random text from the postal service, don't click on anything inside the text. You should delete it right away, not respond, and avoid the link. If you're unsure, you can contact the USPS directly and verify the validity of the text message you received.
