Okay, I think it’s time to clear the air after seeing way too many posts on social media where people are completely losing their minds over a Michigan speeding law that... doesn’t even exist.

Sure, social media has its good moments, but unfortunately, you’ve gotta sift through a lot of garbage to figure out what’s actually real. If you see something that just doesn’t sound or feel right, always do your homework before sharing or sounding off yourself.

One of the latest pieces of misinformation making its rounds involves that very speeding law rumor, and it’s got a lot of folks pretty fired up for no reason at all.

This Michigan Speeding Law Doesn't Exist

So what’s the deal? The rumor says Michigan just passed a new law where you’ll get ticketed for going just 5 mph over the speed limit. Sounds wild, right? But nope, it’s total nonsense. Can you get a ticket for going 5 mph over? Of course, you can.

I mean, you can technically get a speeding ticket for going 1 mph over the speed limit. But cops aren’t exactly out hunting for drivers going 36 in a 35. Most use common sense and their judgment when deciding who to pull over.

Now, don’t get me wrong, Michigan has made some real updates to traffic enforcement lately. For example, speed cameras in construction zones are becoming a thing, and there’s talk about speed-limiting devices for repeat offenders. But there’s nothing about a hard 5 mph cutoff that automatically gets you a ticket.

The internet loves to put people into a frenzy, but at the end of the day, nothing’s really changed. If you're driving responsibly, you're not suddenly in danger of getting nailed for going 40 in a 35.

However, you could lol.
