Longtime Michigan Furniture Retailer Closing Two Stores

Another longtime family-owned retailer is closing multiple Michigan locations after more than 80 years in business.

It may not be the first furniture store that comes to mind, but I guarantee you know the name. It’s been around since the 1940s.

Now, two of its showrooms are closing as the company puts a bigger focus on the locations that are staying open.

What Michigan Furniture Store Is Closing Locations?

According to The Street, Gorman’s Home Furnishings & Interior Design is permanently closing its showrooms in Troy and Southfield.

The locations are:

Troy: 1465 W. Big Beaver Road
Southfield: 29145 Telegraph Road

Store-closing sales will be held at both locations, with a private sale for invited past customers on Aug. 13 and 14. The public sale begins Saturday, Aug. 15.

If you’ve already placed an order or have a delivery scheduled, don’t worry. Gorman’s says everything will still be completed, and you don’t need to do anything unless they reach out to you.

Is Gorman’s Furniture Going Out of Business?

No, Gorman’s isn’t going away completely.

The company will still have its Novi showroom, along with its clearance center and warehouse in Farmington Hills.

The company got its start in Detroit back in 1940, selling furniture and other merchandise that had been damaged during railroad shipments. From there, it grew into a pretty well-known name across Michigan.

Gorman’s says closing the Troy and Southfield stores will allow the company to put more of its employees, inventory, and resources into the locations that are staying open.
