Great…we can now add this to the list.

Starting later this year, there’s another increase coming to your electric bill. It’s one of those charges most people don’t even think about…until it goes up. Honestly, I didn’t even know this was a thing until now.

And yeah, it’s a small increase…but that’s kind of the problem. It’s just one more thing stacking onto a bill that already feels way too high.

Why Are Michigan Electric Bills Increasing Again?

According to MLive, this charge helps fund a statewide program for people who are struggling to keep up with their energy bills. Did you even know you were paying for this?

And look, a lot of people are struggling right now. No argument there. I’ve got no problem helping out…as long as the money is actually going where they say it is.

That’s the part that gets a little frustrating. We don’t really know. You’re basically just taking their word for it and hoping it’s being used the way it’s supposed to be.

The state expanded the program in 2024, allowing this fee to gradually increase over time to support more households.

So What’s Changing?

Right now, the charge sits at $1.25 a month.

Starting in September, it’ll go up to $1.50.

That’s about $18 a year per household. Not a huge hit by itself…but again, it’s another added cost on top of everything else.

What Does Michigan’s Energy Assistance Program Actually Do?

The program helps people stay caught up on their bills, avoid shutoffs, and get set up on more manageable payment plans.

With this increase, the state says it can help around 90,000 households.

It just feels like there’s always something else getting tacked onto your bill. Rates go up. Fees go up. Everything goes up.

When was the last time your bill ever went down? NEVER.
