If asked what Michigan is known for growing, most people would say things like cherries, apples, corn, and other such items. However, Michigan is also the top producer in the United States of a vegetable that may surprise you.

So what is this gross vegetable that is being grown in Michigan in massive quantities? The answer is asparagus. The Mitten is responsible for producing 23 million pounds of this vile vegetable each year. In 2019, the asparagus crop in Michigan was valued at more than $23.2 million.

Here is another thing that I learned today. The Michigan asparagus season runs from late April through June. It is mainly grown near the Lake Michigan shoreline and Michigan asparagus in particular is hand-snapped above the ground.  As far as nutrition is concerned, asparagus is very helpful with blood cell formation, growth, and prevention of liver disease.

Now before all of the asparagus aficionados attack me for calling this a gross vegetable, let me just say two things. First, this is just my opinion. Would you just eat a plate of asparagus for no reason? No. I rest my case.
