Sirens and Alerts Coming to Michigan Soon—Don’t Freak Out
We live in a time when hearing community sirens, alerts, and alarms can be a little concerning. It could be anything, right? I mean, every time I get an Amber Alert on my phone, I nearly jump out of my skin. But I get that’s what they’re intended to do, grab your attention.
It’s nice sometimes to get a heads-up before alerts and sirens blast out to the community, which is exactly what we’re doing right here.
Later this month, Michigan residents will take part in a statewide drill aimed at helping everyone prepare for severe weather emergencies.
Michigan's Voluntary Statewide Tornado 2025
As part of Severe Weather Awareness Week (March 16 to 22), the annual statewide tornado drill will take place on Wednesday, March 19th.
Michigan State Police:
While tornadoes can occur during any time of the year, they are especially common during the late spring and early summer months.
To test your readiness, Michiganders are encouraged to participate in the voluntary statewide tornado drill at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19.
We may think we’re prepared when it comes to severe weather, but I can tell you no one is ever truly ready for the disaster a tornado can bring.
According to Fox 2 Detroit, you’ll probably notice TV and radio alerts, along with outdoor sirens going off during the test. It’s all part of the state’s effort to keep people aware of what it sounds like when a tornado threat is happening.
While this is a statewide test, it's still voluntary, so some communities might not be participating.
