Sneaking off to a warm destination sounds better than ever right now, but make sure you know where you’re headed. Health officials are warning travelers to be careful, because a mosquito-borne virus with no real treatment once you catch it is popping up in certain tropical spots and becoming a major concern.

According to Fox 2 Detroit, it’s called chikungunya, and officials are seeing outbreaks in Cuba, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and parts of southern China. Those might not be the most popular vacation spots for Michiganders, but the warning matters because the risk goes beyond places with active outbreaks. You could still run into the virus in other popular beach destinations.

Here’s the deal. You can’t treat this thing once you get it. There is a vaccine, but you have to get it before you travel. If you skip it, you’re basically just rolling the dice.

What Are the Chikungunya Symptoms?

The most common symptoms hit fast. We’re talking fever, brutal joint pain, a rash, headaches, muscle aches, and just an overall miserable time. Most people recover within a week, but some end up dealing with joint pain for months or even years. In severe cases, the virus can cause serious complications and land you in the hospital.

And before anyone says “that won’t happen to me,” the CDC also says travelers headed to places like Brazil, India, Mexico, Colombia, Nigeria, Thailand, and the Philippines are still at risk even if an official outbreak isn’t happening right now.
