What to Do If a Package Is Delivered to Your House by Mistake in Michigan
It’s not shocking from time to time to find someone else’s package sitting on your front porch. Sometimes it belongs to a neighbor down the street. Other times, it’s addressed to someone you’ve never even heard of.
We already know you’re not allowed to put anything in someone else’s mailbox. That’s a hard no.
So now what? Can you keep it? Are you allowed to touch it? And can you just walk it over to your neighbor without getting yourself into trouble?
Can You Deliver a Misdelivered Package Yourself in Michigan
Here’s the simple Michigan answer. Yes, you can legally deliver it yourself. No, you cannot keep it (duh).

If the package clearly has someone else’s name and address on it, it does not suddenly become yours just because it landed on your porch. Opening it or hanging onto it can cross into theft territory, even if the delivery company messed up.
The good news is you are allowed to do the neighborly thing. If you recognize the name or the address is nearby, you can absolutely walk it over and drop it off. That is not illegal. That is just correcting a mistake.

The one hard rule is this. Don’t open it. Ever. Not to check what it is. Not to see if it is expensive. Not even out of curiosity. Nope. Never.
If you are not comfortable delivering it yourself, your best bet is to report it as misdelivered through the carrier or leave it where it is for pickup. Just don’t treat it like a free bonus gift from the universe.
