Two People Rescued After Going Over Michigan Waterfall

You don’t hear very often about someone being swept over a waterfall, let alone two people surviving with only minor injuries. But that’s exactly what happened Monday afternoon in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Two People Swept Over Rainbow Falls

According to the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office, it happened around 1:38 Monday afternoon along the Black River Trail. Witnesses said they saw two people go over Rainbow Falls and could hear someone yelling from the water.

Apparently, one person was trying to cross the Black River when they slipped and fell in. The other person tried to help, but the current ended up pulling both of them over the falls.

And we’re not talking about some tiny drop, either. Rainbow Falls is estimated to be around 40 feet high, which makes what happened next pretty unbelievable.

If you saw something like this in a movie, you’d probably roll your eyes and say there’s no way anyone could survive it. Somehow, though, both people did.

Rescue Crews Hoisted Both People to Safety

Search and rescue crews were able to reach both people and hoist them to safety.

And somehow, after being swept over a 40-foot waterfall, they walked away with only minor injuries. Seriously, what are the odds? Their names have not been released.

There’s really no question this could have ended very differently. Water near a waterfall might not look all that dangerous from the shore, but once that current grabs hold of you, there’s not much you can do.
