As we head in to Spring there is still a lot of ice covering Michigan's waterways. But this time of year you are certainly taking a gamble when walking on it. And with the warm temperatures in Michigan this past week the situation is even more volatile. The danger became terrifyingly real yesterday for Genesee County men two men.

Monday afternoon Genesee County 911 received multiple emergency calls prompting them to dispatch the police and fire departments in Grand Blanc Township to a pond on Canter Creek Trail. They rushed there to assist two men who had been fishing.

Police reports indicate that that one of the two fishermen fell into the water becoming incapacitated. While trying to rescue the first man, the second man also fell into the freezing cold water.

As the rescue team from the fire department showed up on the scene the township police were already pulling one of the men out of the water. The fire department was able to locate and recover the second man. Local officials say the second man was found about 60 feet from shore in roughly 8 to 10 feet of water.

The police report also said 'Firefighters in the water and crews on the shore pulled him back onto land less than 15 minutes after they arrived on the scene.' Both men were rushed to a local hospital.

Today Sergent Tim Bueche from the Grand Blanc Township Police Department confirmed to local media that of the two men from Grand Blanc that were involved that the older of the two men, an 84-year-old, did not survive while the other man involved, an 81-year-old, will be okay.
