All Roads Lead to Michigan: Nurse Finishes 50-State Quest at Detroit Race
A travel nurse who set out to run a marathon in every U.S. state crossed her final finish line in Detroit. Michelle Floyd completed her 15-year, 50-state challenge at the Detroit Free Press Marathon — fittingly, on the weekend of her 50th birthday.
That's right: 50 runs, 50 states, 50 birthdays.
Floyd’s 50-State Marathon Journey
Michelle Floyd is a travel nurse based in Kansas. When she was 35, she set an ambitious goal for herself: to run a marathon or half-marathon in each of the 50 U.S. states by the time she hit the half-century mark.
Marathon Runner Makes Significant Career Pivot
Floyd had to make a career adjustment to make her marathon dream possible. She left a staff nursing job behind so she could race across the country, combining her love of running with her work on the road.
"It's 100% the reason why I quit my staff nursing jobs because at my staff nursing job, I wasn't able to take PTO because they were short-staffed all the time," Floyd tells WXYZ-TV in the video below. "So, I had to say goodbye to my favorite place I worked to complete my goal, and it worked."
Significance of the Detroit Marathon
Before last weekend's Detroit Free Press Marathon, Floyd noted that the annual Motor City marathon would always be significant to her as it marked her final race.
"I'm super excited about this one. It's an international race; I get to go into Canada. It's going to be so exciting. I can't wait," Floyd said.
