Whether you’re sending a letter, waiting on a package, or grabbing that stack of bills, the one piece of mail that never seems to get lost, Michigan residents might notice things aren’t quite the same as the post office prepares to roll out two big changes this summer.

USPS Implements Changes in 2025

Starting July 1, the U.S. Postal Service is rolling out the second phase of a nationwide shift in how mail delivery is timed and measured — and Michigan is included.

You may have noticed changes to mail delivery starting April 1 as phase one of the 'Delivering for America' plan was implemented. Michigan residents in rural areas might have seen improvements, as mail carriers were allowed to leave postal facilities earlier and travel longer routes to deliver mail.

One Change Could Slow Delivery—for Some

With phase two arriving on July 1, USPS will stop measuring delivery speed based on broad regional zones and start tracking mail movement from ZIP code to ZIP code.

For some Michigan residents, especially in rural communities, this might mean slower First-Class delivery. But for others, particularly in or near larger cities, some local mail may actually arrive faster, within just 2 to 3 days.

USPS says these changes will save money and that roughly 75% of all mail will see no change in delivery speed.

Stamp Prices Are Going Up Again

The second big change hits July 13, when the price of a First-Class “Forever” stamp jumps from 73 cents to 78 cents. It’s part of the Postal Service’s broader plan to raise revenue, and it marks the second stamp price hike in just 12 months.

Postcard postage and international mail are going up too, so if you’re thinking about stocking up on stamps, now’s the time.
