Drunk Driver Slams Into Two Michigan State Police Cars on Dort Highway
If you've ever driven past police lights and wondered why they always tell you to slow down and move over, here's a pretty good example.
Michigan State Police Hit While Blocking Traffic for a Barn Fire
Early Saturday morning, Michigan State Police troopers were blocking the northbound lanes of Dort Highway near Frances Road because of a barn fire farther up the road. One trooper was sitting inside a patrol vehicle while another was outside placing flares to keep drivers away from the scene.
That's when investigators say a 29-year-old driver came flying north on Dort Highway at a high rate of speed and crashed into one patrol car, shoving it into the second patrol vehicle before losing control and ending up in a ditch.
Michigan State Trooper Suffers Minor Injuries After Patrol Car Crash
Thankfully, the outcome wasn't even worse. One trooper suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from a local hospital. No one else was hurt.
According to Michigan State Police, the driver is accused of being intoxicated. Troopers also say he didn't have a driver's license, didn't have insurance, and had an outstanding probation violation warrant from Lapeer County. He was taken to the Lapeer County Jail after the investigation.
Police Remind Drivers to Slow Down and Move Over for Emergency Vehicles
The crash remains under investigation, and once it's finished, the case will be sent to the Genesee County Prosecutor for possible charges.
It's another reminder that those flashing emergency lights aren't just there to get your attention. They're protecting first responders working in dangerous conditions, and moving over or slowing down can make all the difference.
