Since 1966 the Michigan beer tax has stayed at $6.30 per barrel. The new tax increase will raise the tax to $21.70 per barrel. The revenue from the new tax would go towards state recovery programs, additional police departments that would tackle underage drinking, and drug treatment courts.

You could be seeing a tax hike when you pick up your next six pack of beer, and its all about curing alcoholism according to Rep. Tom Hooker

The new bill was introduced today in front of the House Committee on Regulatory Reform, and according to Hooker the bill would help save lives.

We have a problem in our society with car accidents, family description, abuse, and overuse, and binge drinking, so this will take a step in the right direction towards dealing with the problem. - Rep. Tom Hooker

Hooker has stated in his recent interview that this new tax would be considered a "sin tax" and that he does not drink himself, but sees the effects of harmful excessive drinking.
