Eighth-seeded North Carolina was in the unusual role of underdog. The Tar Heels faced top-seeded Kansas, which barely stayed away from suffering a historic upset to Western Kentucky on Friday. The Jayhawks rallied past North Carolina for a victory. Third-seeded Florida crushed 11th-seeded Minnesota, while the upstart Cinderellas of Florida Gulf Coast employed the same magic against San Diego State that they used in upsetting Georgetown in the previous round.

Sherwood Brown scored 17 points, and 15th-seeded Florida Gulf Coast pulled its second upset in three days by beating San Diego State, 81-71, in a third round game of the 2013 NCAA tournament's South Region in Philadelphia on Sunday. Point guard Brett Comer had 10 points and 14 assists for the Eagles, who are making the first NCAA tournament appearance in school history. Florida Gulf Coast advanced to play third-seeded Florida in the round of 16 in Arlington, Tex. on Friday. Jamaal Franklin led San Diego State with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Mike Rosario scored 25 points, and third-seeded Florida soundly defeated 11th-seeded Minnesota, 78-64, in a third round game of the 2013 NCAA tournament's South Region in Austin, Tex. on Sunday. The Gators zoomed to a 21-point lead at halftime and cruised for the victory. Florida will play Florida Gulf Coast in the round of 16 in Arlington, Tex. on Friday. Andre Hollins led Minnesota with 25 points and five rebounds.

Travis Releford scored 22 points and top-seeded Kansas used a furious second-half rally to beat eighth-seeded North Carolina, 70-58, in a third round game of the 2013 NCAA tournament's South Region on Sunday in Kansas City, Mo. North Carolina blazed to a double-digit lead in the first five minutes of the game, and the Tar Heels still led by nine at halftime. However, the Jayhawks roared back and outscored Roy Williams' team 49-28 in the second half. Center Jeff Withey added 16 points and 16 rebounds for Kansas, who will play fourth-seeded Michigan in the round of 16 in Arlington, Tex. on Friday. P.J. Hairston's 15 points and nine boards led North Carolina.
