Nicki Minaj, Quavo and Lil Dicky Star in Elaborate ‘Madden NFL 19′ Video Game Commercial
The release of EA Sports' Madden NFL 19 is now just about a week away, and with that in mind, promotion for the next entry into the brand's storied video game franchise is in full effect. The latest sign of this comes in the form of a new commercial starring Nicki Minaj, Quavo and the hilarious Lil Dicky.
For the new advert, which is a very elaborate one, Nicki kicks it in a diner as Dicky and Saturday Night Live's Chris Redd tell the story of a legendary Madden NFL player by the name of Will. In one particularly funny scene, Nicki manages a clever plug for her Queen album and some humor when Lil Dicky asks for her gamer tag.
"It's Chun underscore, The Queen album, underscore, mind your business, underscore..." Nicki says before adding a subtle purring/growling sound into her gamer tag.
For his part, Quavo makes a song about the aforementioned Will, whose story takes on the status of a flat-out urban legend as Dicky and Redd continue telling their tale. All in all, it's pretty funny stuff.
That said, EA Sports and the NFL have found themselves in some PR trouble over the last day or so. Earlier this week, folks with advanced access to Madden NFL 19 noticed that one particular Big Sean lyric from his YG collab, "Big Bank," was censored. The lyric in question references embattled former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, who famously knelt during the playing of the National Anthem before games during the 2016 NFL regular season.
Speaking on the matter yesterday (Aug. 2), Big Sean denounced EA Sports' censorship of his Kaepernick name-drop. A short while later, EA Sports apologized to Sean while offering an explanation for their removal of the rapper's name-drop.
"We made an unfortunate mistake with our Madden NFL soundtrack," reads the first part of EA Sports' apology. "Members of our team misunderstood the fact that while we don't have rights to include Colin Kaepernick in the game, this doesn't affect soundtracks. We messed up, and the edit should never have happened. We will make it right, with an update to Madden NFL 19 on August 6 that will include the reference again. We meant no disrespect, and we apologize to Colin, to YG and Big Sean, to the NFL, to all of their fans and our players for this mistake."
