‘Rap Quotes’ Walking Tour Showcases New York Locales Through Lyrics
Dope alert. Here's a visual way to brush up on your hip-hop history.
Artist and New Yorker Jay Shells took notice of the many blocks and streets in his native city that are shouted out in rap songs. He decided to make posters of those specific lyrics and put them up at the exact locations being mentioned in the song.
The 'Rap Quotes' walking tour was born and Shells spent last weekend putting quotes from rappers Jay-Z, Nas, Kanye West and many other lyricists on signs at 30 different locales throughout New York City.
“There are so many blocks that get called out in songs but a block can be huge,” Shells told the Daily News this week.
“A corner or venue is a place where you can put a stake in the ground and say, ‘This is mentioned.’ But it’s really specific locations, a place where you could put a brass plaque in the ground and say, ‘This happened here.’”
View more posters below and at the Rap Quotes Twitter page here.
This should start a movement perhaps in other cities. What other locations should Jay Shells take on?
