Snapchat Catches Heat for Insensitive Assault Ad Featuring Chris Brown and Rihanna
The photo and video app has dipped 3.6 percent in stock since Rihanna went on an Instagram rant about the ad, costing the company an estimated $800 million in value according to Harper's Bazaar.
Rihanna wrote in red on her Instagram story that the advertisement was offensive not just to her but to all victims of domestic violence, as the ad referenced the 2009 assault that took place between her and her then-boyfriend Chris Brown.
Earlier this week, Snapchat ran an insensitive ad to promote an app that asked users if they would rather "slap Rihanna" or "punch Chris Brown."
The ad was quickly slammed for being tone-deaf and using Rihanna's past domestic violence history with Brown as the butt of a joke. While the ad was eventually removed, Breezy's lawyer and Rihanna herself had something to say about it.
“They should change their name from Snapchat to Tone Deaf,” attorney Mark Geragos told Us Weekly.
RiRi had much more to say in her statement, blasting Snapchat for making a joke of domestic violence. "Now SNAPCHAT I know you already know you ain’t my fav app out there! But I’m just trying to figure out what the point was with this mess!," she wrote on Instagram.
"I’d love to call it ignorance, but I know you ain’t that dumb! You spent money to animate something that would intentionally bring shame to DV victims and made a joke of it!!!" the singer continued. "This isn’t about my personal feelings, cause I don’t have much of them...but all the women, children, and men that have been victims of DV in the past and especially the ones who haven’t made it out yet...you let us down! Shame on you. Throw the whole app-oligy away."
The singer's statement came after Snapchat apologized for the ad, claiming it was "reviewed and approved in error" as it violates their advertising guidelines. The company added, “We immediately removed the ad last weekend, once we became aware. We are sorry that this happened.”
