Every year, the Met Ball welcomes the world's A-listers to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to showcase their glamorous wares. Not only is it the museum's annual charity event, it gives stars the opportunity to put their style on front street and wow the crowd.

This year, the gala's dress code was "white tie," which was inspired by renowned tailor and ball gown designer Charles James, whose exhibition, 'Charles James: Beyond Fashion,' has opened in the newly renovated museum's Costume Institute.

While Hollywood's finest made appearances, some of music's biggest names also made their way down the red carpet on Monday night (May 5). Take a look at who made an appearance, what they wore and who wore it best.

Like all couples who like to coordinate outfits, Jay Z and Beyonce agreed on wearing Givenchy. While the rapper looked very classic in his black-and-white tux -- opting for a black bowtie opposed to a white one -- Beyonce took a fashion risk with a low-cut, sheer beaded number. The train on the dress was so elaborate that she even had her stylist help her walk the carpet. While this was not one of our favorite outfits of the night, the netted headpiece was a nice touch to complete the look.

While Beyonce went for a dark gothic look, her little sister Solange looked sweet and couture in her 3.1 Philip Lim satin dress. Although she broke the "gown" rule, the skirt had enough flounce to make it seem like a ball gown. Choosing to go for a peachy pink tone and a cropped bob, Solange was one of the fresher and modern looks that walked the carpet that night -- clearly a favorite.

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian didn't experiment too much with their fashion decisions at the Met Ball. Going for Lanvin on both outfits, Kanye did opt out of a tie and looked like a classical composer on the red carpet. Meanwhile, Kim chose a dark turquoise, strapless gown with black trim and a high slit that not only showed most of her leg but also a bit of her undies, too.

After donning the gothic look at the iHeart Radio Music Awards over the weekend, she went for something a bit more angelic at the Met Ball. Wearing Stella McCartney, Rihanna donned a white crop and slim-fitting, full-length skirt that was complete with a train. As simple as the gown looks, it's the fact that most of her back is exposed with a nice golden accent by her neck. This clearly makes the best dressed list for the evening.

If there's anyone who can break fashion norms, it's Janelle Monae. The singer stuck to her signature black-and-white attire with a Tadashi Shoji number paired with an embroidered jacket. The Wondaland Arts leader was the picture of sophistication with a long braid and red lip.

While everyone is probably talking more about her hat than her entire ensemble, Erykah Badu went for a pants suit instead of a dress last night. Her wardrobe was more on the simple side, but she did make her own personal statement at the Met Ball.

Since becoming the new face for DKNY, it only seemed right for Rita Ora to wear one of the designer's dresses. Wearing a golden Donna Karan Atelier gown, there were so many layers to the skirt of the dress that it did prove to be a bit of a challenge on the red carpet. Not only was she photographed getting caught in its layers, but the singer also even flashed photographers for a millisecond.

There's nothing like young love, and A$AP Rocky and model Chanel Iman looked so sweet on the red carpet. Rocky proved he cleans up well in a suit sans the tie. Although we're not sure who designed it, the rapper clearly knows how to take a style risk with a longer suit jacket and boots opposed to dress shoes to tie everything together. Chanel picked a Topshop slinky dress, Jimmy Choo shoes and a vintage Judith Lieber from Decades clutch.

John Legend and Chrissy Teigen wore Ralph Lauren, choosing to go for a more simple yet classic. The singer went for the full penguin suit on this one, including the white bowtie. And if you look really closely, you can see a silver accent hanging from the inside of his coat like the chain of a pocket watch. Chrissy played up the ruffles and glitz with a floor-length silver number that is all business in the front but skin-bearing party in the back.

Not a stranger to wearing monochrome on the red carpet, Miguel was in his own element by wearing a traditional tux complete with a white bowtie.

Before performing at the event, Frank Ocean also made his grand entrance on the red carpet. The singer looks dapper in a Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci white suit. But as traditional as he was with the look, he had to add a little bling with Jacob & Co. earrings.
